Gaëtan Côté - Jeweller / Gemmologiste
A member of the Conseil des métiers d'art du Québec since 2012, Gaëtan Côté is interested in art, beautiful objects, shapes, and since childhood, he has been attracted to whatever glitters.
After graduating in visual arts from Cégep Édouard Montpetit in the eighties, he continued his career with evening classes in jewellery making at the Montreal School of Jewelry. His growing passion for metals quickly led him to work in this field. He worked for 21 years in a production workshop specializing in pearls and diamonds. Climbing the ladder, he acquired a great deal of experience and his boss had immense esteem for his know-how and hard work. He became the head of the workshop and was given the opportunity to create his own pieces on site. He began exhibiting in a few galleries such as SUK-KWAN on Saint-Laurent, in 1992.
While continuing to work at the same place, he gained experience and confidence. In that same year, overflowing with creativity he developed a display company called Groupe Mutation. Sharing his life with a clothing design student from Lasalle College, he created events in collaboration with students at the end of their training. A fashion and jewellery show, a photo shoot for the newspaper Le Miroir and a fashion and jewelry show with the "Body-body" collection in 1995.
In 1992, he appeared in the magazine Elle Québec (special Creator Québécois) and the magazine MTL for the men's collection. In 1993, the magazine Les Ailes de la Mode, in 1994, the newspaper La Presse, in 2001, the magazine DECOR Homme, Châtelaine and in 2008 in the journal Urbania as well as several others.
His thirst for knowledge led him to undertake a certificate in gemmology at the Montreal School of Gemmology in 2004 and to finally continue his training to become a gemologist (FGA) in 2007. That same year, he took the plunge and opened his own workshop at 620 Cathcart under the name Gitan. D. Côté.
This workshop specialized in creation, repair and small production and existed until 2015. Always concerned about the well-being of others, in 2012 he joined forces with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens to participate in the "Nutcracker" Christmas market, of which part of the profits went to children.
Curious and alert after 31 years of experience, he is looking for new challenges. Gaëtan has been a teacher at the École des métiers du sud-ouest de Montréal from October 2015 until today. As a teacher he is passing on his great passion for metals, stones and all things glittering!
