3D Printed Materials Exploration Workshop

Instructor: Norsola Johnson

The majority of the workshop will be spent designing, printing and working out ways to create pieces using 3D printed elements.

3D printing is commonly used in the industry as a time and money saving production method. However the uncast prints themselves (either resin or nylon, depending of the type of printer) can be used as components in their own right.

Though it is a relatively niche material, it offers many new possibilities in art jewellery.

Bring your own laptop - Prerequiste: students should be able to create their own designs in the software of their choice (Rhino, Blender, ZBrush, Maya…)

The workshop will not be a course on 3D modelling, so students must be autonomous and comfortable with it.

Students will be encouraged to come with designs already created on their computers. The teacher will also have some to offer in the class.

  • Bilingual

Saturday July 12 and Saturday July 19, 2025

  • 10:00 am to 5:00 pm (one hour lunch break)

  • $180.00 ( tax not included )

  • Materials are not included. Materials may be purchased from the instructor (tools provided).

Maximum 6 students per class

Material to be covered in the course:

COLOUR: Dyes for resins and how to use them. Demo on how to mix dye into resins, and adjustments that may need to be made on print settings.

One of the printers will have dyed resin (colour to be determined) and the other will be loaded with standard grey resin (to paint afterwards, if desired)

Painting resins: demo of possibilities for adding colour to an already cured resin piece.

FINISHING: Demo on best practices for shaping/filing and polishing resin pieces.

SAFETY: In theory, cured resins are inert and should be fine for short term wear, but for longer term, it is safer to coat or varnish the pieces. A good rule of thumb is to coat anything that will be in direct contact with skin for an extended period of time.
